The setting of Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, is considered a major compress by most critics because of the severe winters in Starkfield, a small New England town at the duty tour of the century which deeply influence its characters. Starkfield affects Ethan, the protagonist, because the sterile and unappeasable environment engulf him and stunt his dreams from becoming a reality.
