What Are In-State Colleges Should I Go to One SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips In-state colleges can be great options if you live in a state with a strong university system. But what are the positives and negatives of these schools, and is an in-state school the right choice for you? I’ll go through the pros and cons of attending an in-state college, give you some examples of schools that fit this mold, and help you figure out if you should go. What Are In-State Colleges? For all intents and purposes, the term â€Å"in-state colleges† refers to public universities in your home state.They are colleges that provide specialized aid and tuition breaks to students who live in the state and choose to attend. I will not include private colleges in this category because there is usually no monetary incentive for in-state students to attend. In other words, a student who lives in Massachusetts won't get any tuition breaks if he or she enrolls at Harvard. The Pros and Cons of In-State Colleges There are some pluses and minus to attending in-state colleges that you should take into account before making the decision to apply. I'll list the most significant pros and cons in the next couple of sections. Pros 1. Higher Odds of Acceptance It may be easier to get accepted to an in-state college. In-state students are more likely to actually attend the school after being accepted, and state schools are eager to accept students from the area who may later contribute to the local economy. This trend has become less prominent, however, as schools that face budget cuts are now more incentivized to accept out of state students who will pay a higher tuition price. At UCLA, for example, in-state students now face a lower acceptance rate than out-of-state students (although the UC system overall still accepts California students at a higher rate that out-of-staters). 2. Better Financial Aid and Scholarships Students who choose to attend in-state colleges will have access to special financial aid offers and scholarships.For example, UMASS offers a full tuition scholarship to students who score especially well on the MCAS, the standardized assessment that all Massachusetts public school students must take to be eligible for a high school diploma. 3. Lower Tuition Prices If you attend an in-state school, you will have to pay less in tuition compared to out of state students. This can mean a tuition price that's up to 75% lower than out of state tuition and a total savings of more than $80,000 over the course of four years. However, some university systems do allow students in adjacent states to attend their colleges for close to the same price as in-state students.The University of Minnesota system has agreements with Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Manitoba, Canada that allow for students in those states (and province) to attend while paying similar tuition prices as in-state students. 4. Fewer Extra Expenses You’ll save money on travel expenses. You might even be able to cut out any significant dorm living expenses if you choose to commute and live at home. 5. Government-Funded Research Opportunities Public universities get government funding for research facilities and academic resources, so you will most likely have access to a wide variety of exciting academic opportunities if you’re willing to look for them. Cons 1. Missing Out on the Full College Experience Going to college close to home may lead to less independence and too much reliance on family support.You could beless motivated to make new friends in college because you’ll be able to see your old friends so frequently.In general, you probably won't have access to as many new experiences and places to explore because you’ll already be familiar with the area. 2. Loss of Direction Since state colleges tend to be fairly large, it's easy to get lost in the crowd or find that you don’t have the guidance you need for your academic career. 3. Frustrating Bureaucracy Classes are often difficult to get into, and large class sizes are common, so it may be harder to form relationships with professors or work with them one on one. Major tracks also tend to be more rigid with less room for personalization. Examples of In-State Colleges To give you more of an idea of what in-state colleges are actually like, here are some examples with brief descriptions of their stats and academic offerings. University of California System The University of California state college system is probably the strongest and most competitive in the nation.These universities offer cutting edge research opportunities, and admissions standards can be very high: the acceptance rate at UC Berkeley is an intimidating 18%.There are 220,000 students in the entire UC system, with an average of around 20,000 undergraduates at each of the nine undergraduate campuses listed below. In-state students in the top 4% of their high school class who meet regular admissions standards are guaranteed admission to the UC system (but not a particular campus).Budget problems have made these school relatively pricey even for in-state students, so be warned. UC Berkeley estimates the total cost for one year of attendance for in-state students living in a residence hall at $32,646. The university centers in the SUNY system are very competitive and offer many resources to students.Each is known for different program strengths; Binghamton in particular is strong in undergraduate arts and sciences while Stony Brook is known for its hard science programs. These schools include: University of Texas at AustinUniversity of Texas at DallasTexas AM UniversityTexas Tech University A cool fountain where students hang out on the UT Austin campus Should You Go to an In-State College? Now that you know more about the benefits and drawbacks of in-state colleges, you’ll need to do some self-reflection so you can decide whether an in-state school is right for you. The first thing you should consider is cost. This is often the biggest difference between in-state and out-of-state colleges.At the University of Florida, for example, undergraduate tuition and fees for in-state students are $6,130 for a year, but tuition and fees for out-of-state students are $28,278.This can make a huge difference in your level of college debt and may even make it so you can just pay for college out of pocket. This article will mainly address the last question:   Keywords or USP?   The answer to the question depends on your main goal with your LinkedIn profile. Narrative Communities in Translation Studies Essay An elaborate network of translators, called Babels, volunteers from all over Europe, sat in little boxes translating the cries against imperialism, capitalism, colonialism and occupation into English, French, Spanish, German,Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic and Ð ° plethora of other languages including Euskera. It has been suggested by the Fisher that communication transactions are responsible for the co-constitution of the communities, in which a story with the coherence and fidelity for the life is co-authored by the participants. In this regard, two types of community have been suggested by the Fisher. Concession or conformity creates the first type of community, and election or conversion creates the second type of community. In this regard, in the world of translation, concession or conformity has created a number of examples of communities. Today, several professional and academic associations are boasted by most countries, whether in professional or academic circles, by which different types of platforms for the conduction of communication transactions for the support of such communities are provided by it. Members of these translation communities recognize that the concrete experiences of our lives cannot be changed without simultaneously changing the narratives that underpin them. Babels was set up in September 2oo2 by Ð ° group of activists linked to the French branch of the alternative globalization network, ATTAC, to meet the translation and interpreting needs of the European Social Forum (ESF) in Florence. The groups debut in Florence featured 35o volunteer translators and interpreters working without Ð ° budget and without even basic facilities such as computers and telephones. The success and dedication of the group and their effective participation in the conferences opposing the G8 in Evian and Annemasse in May and June 2oo3, however, convinced the Paris ESF organizers to give them decent facilities and the relatively large sum of ? 2oo,ooo to prepare for the next forum. This investment seems to have paid off because the Paris ESF held in 2oo3 was serviced by more than 1ooo Babelitos drawn from Ð ° volunteer pool four times that number. The Chrysalids:   The Importance of Telepathy    Some people dream about having an ability to communicate through mental telepathy.   Some even claimed to have this ability but it played an important role in the novel The Chrysalids.   The author created an interesting environment.   There was no communication and the only people who could communicate between each other were the ones that had the power of telepathy.   Because in some areas the land was so dangerous because of the radiation that people were cut of from another and left on a small piece of land.   They could not communicate.   Though-shapes not only developed the plot of the story but greatly affected the lives of some characters and might affect Waknuk.   Ã‚  Ã‚   We all know that people in Waknuk were very superstitious but did it actually help the plot to develop?  Ã‚   On page 91 through 103 finally and idea gets out about some people being able to communicate through thought-shapes.   When Katherine and Sally got caught and tortured they finally tell some of the names to the inspector.   This forces David, Rosalind and Petra to runaway to the fringes, and they established some kind of contact with a woman from Sealant (Zealand, On page 134).   The help that the sealant woman promised is on their way to the fringes.   The plot is greatly influenced, David learns more things as the time goes on.   He discovers who is the Spiderman(Gordon) and where is Sophie.   He meets them and learn what it is like to live in the fringes.   When the sealant woman rescues David, Rosalind and Petra they are brought to a big, developed city like the one in David's dreams. Because of the telepathy David discovers that such a city really exists but most of all through Petra they establish contact with a more civilized people than they are.   Because of the conflicts in the story it leads the main characters to discover the sealant city.   Ã‚  Ã‚   Telepathy not only affects the plot of the story but also the main characters in the novel.   The most obvious thing is that David, Rosalind and Petra are saved.   They have a chance to learn, experience new things they never saw or heard before.

Parents choose who can marry you and they choose everything for you. In this book, Laila and Mariam both show the struggles it is to be a girl, and how much disrespect they get in Afghanistan. Both Mariam and Laila are married to the same man, and he is abusive to both of them. They also live under Taliban rule, and the rules that they set are very unfair for women.In Khaled Hosseni’s novel, he has many different themes but the most prevalent one is of woman inequality, and that is shown through multiple accounts of abuse, disrespect, and unfairness. While living in Afghanistan, Laila and Mariam both find themselves with little freedoms. They had to stay in their houses almost all the time, and were pretty much slaves to their husbands. For the rest of Afghanistan, The freedoms for girls and women are limited or not even existent in some situations.During September of 1996, the Taliban came into control of Afghanistan. Early in there rule, they set down rules for both men and woman. As a man you only had simple rules like, â€Å"All men will grow their beards† and, â€Å"All boys will wear turbans† (248 Hosseini). But as a woman, they had rules like, â€Å"Girls are forbidden from attending school,† and â€Å"Women are forbidden from working† (249 Hosseini). Women were also not allowed to go outside without a man or they would be beaten and sent home (248). As rules normally do they cause rebellious people.As the book progresses we find out that Laila had to give up her kid to an orphanage because Rasheed and Laila could not provide for that many of people any more. As a desperate mom, Laila had to sneak to the orphanage because Rasheed would no longer take her. Many times she got caught, when she got caught, Laila was sometimes, â€Å"riddled with questions† but other times she had to deal with, â€Å"wooden clubs, fresh tree branches, short whips, slaps, often fists† (285 Hosseini). As women, Laila’s freedoms were limited and Khaled Hosseini was ertain to show the struggles that women had because of that. Another example of the unfairness to women is that fact, that men are also abusive to them. Being a man, means they have all the power. They make all the decisions and what they want to happen happens. Early in the book, Jalil, Mariam’s father, chooses a random suitor for her to marry. He forces it on her just to get her as far away from his family as possible. Her suitor ended up to be an abusive husband. Just in a matter of seconds, Rasheed, their husband would flip and turn abusive.As depicted early in their marriage, Khaled Hosseini wrote, â€Å"He was like this, sneering, tightening the belt around his fist, the creaking of the leather, the glint in his bloodshot eyes. Many often fear to voice their ideas out to the public in fear of harsh criticism or simply they doubt the quality of the idea itself. My mind is constantly thinking of ideas and new spins I can take on things. Many times in certain classes a teacher will ask a question and I will have a somewhat answer that I doubt to say in fear of what my teacher and peers will think of me. However, it is completely unsatisfying to hear your idea voiced through someone else’s mouth when you were thinking of it first. On the other hand, it is completely gratifying to be able to state your ideas and in addition feel confident in what you are stating. It is even more rewarding to oneself when an idea you voiced is taken well by people. It is a feeling of satisfaction that no one can take from you to be able to state something you firmly believe in and know it is of your own and no one can take it from you. I enjoy creating things and adding my own touch in everything I do. I take pleasure in simple things such as creating the background of my journal website or changing the colors and fonts. Although it may be something small and insignificant to others it’s nice to know you have something of your own that you made and created. I like that in my ceramics class, I can be as creative as I want with designing my own piece of art and being able to express originality in how I do things and then come home with a finished result. However, what I take most pride in when it comes to my own ideas being sacred is the center spread of the school newspaper. I seriously spend so much time making the layout as perfect as possible because it’s the only section of the newspaper that can look entirely different from the rest. I can make cut outs of the pictures, play with fonts and create a new feel. Although I am still learning and have much to learn I love that each time it improves an d I can have the power to create something that everyone looks at. The feeling, â€Å"Wow, I made that† is just a feeling unlike no other because I know it came from me. The integrity of your own mind varies from what you think you can do at what you can actually achieve. The key is to trust your mind and originality and then one can achieve greatness like no other. It may not necessarily be fame, but simply self-satisfaction in yourself, in your ideas and be able to surpass repressed feelings of doubt and flourish creative ideals that no person can take from you. It has been difficult to be able to speak up at times because I can be quite timid in general and especially shy around those I am not comfortable around. However, once I got passed that I was able to see that, one can never go wrong saying what is on their mind. Sure it can be wrong, and many are going to be wrong many times. However, greatness is not achieved with self-doubt and shyness. One has to be confident in themselves to make a difference. That means that we must regularly examine what has worked and what hasnt worked in the classroom, despite how painful it can sometimes be to look in the mirror. Once you self-reflect you then need to take your answers and turn them into positive, resolute statements that give you concrete goals on which to focus immediately.
